Assisting Clients With Transitioning to New School

One of my colleagues at work today shared this idea during group supervision, and I thought it was brilliant:

As school-based therapists, we continue to meet with our clients during the summer out in the community, in their home, etc. Some of our clients are transitioning from elementary to middle school, or middle school to high school. This of course is a major life change for our clients, and if they are already unstable, this may cause a huge amount of stress/anxiety for them.

My colleague shared that one of her clients is transitioning to high school and is in fact feeling very anxious about it. So, for a couple of their recent sessions, they have met at the high school and walked around so that he feels more comfortable.

I thought that this was such a practical, helpful idea, and her client has responded well to it. It will most certainly reduce his anxiety, since he will at least be familiar with the campus!

Do you have any other ideas/activities that might help children transition from one school to the next easier? I'd love to hear them, comment below!
